  • Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene wants to become Trump's VP in 2024, NBC News reported.
  • "She sees herself on the short list for Trump's VP," Steve Bannon, a Trump ally, said.
  • Greene has recently sought to position herself as an influential figure in the GOP.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene is seeking to become former President Donald Trump's pick for vice president in 2024, according to two sources who have spoken with the Georgia Republican, NBC News reported on Wednesday.

"She sees herself on the short list for Trump's VP," Steve Bannon, an ally to Trump and his former one-time White House strategist, told the news outlet.

"This is no shrinking violet, she's ambitious — she's not shy about that, nor should she be," said Bannon, who hosts the "War Room" podcast, which Greene has appeared on.

Another source who spoke anonymously to NBC said Greene's "whole vision" is to be the No. 2 in the White House.

Greene's office did not immediately return Insider's request for comment.

In recent months, Greene has attempted to build a reputation as an influential figure in the GOP who can work to settle intraparty conflict. She's grown close to House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and notably rallied behind him during the days-long battle for the gavel earlier this month. It marked a rare break from her fellow far-right members, who were against McCarthy, though Greene still aligns with them on many of her policy positions.

"She's both strategic and disciplined — she made a power move, knowing it would run up hard against her most ardent crew," Bannon said of Greene to NBC News. "She was prepared to take the intense heat/hatred short-term for the long-term goal of being a player."

The congresswoman has also secured spots on the House Oversight and Homeland Security committees, NBC News noted, allowing her to take part in investigations of the Biden administration. She was booted off committees by House Democrats last Congress over her past inflammatory remarks.

Greene, who handily won her reelection last year by more than 30 percentage points, has long been a staunch supporter of Trump. The two have appeared at rallies together and heaped praise on each other. The congresswoman has described Trump as her "favorite president, whom she rang up during the House speaker vote, captured in a high-profile photograph with his phone contact saved as "DT."

Trump in November became the first person of a major party to launch a 2024 presidential bid. But with 650 days until the election, he's not yet made any big announcements on his campaign. A spokesperson for Trump did not immediately return Insider's request for comment.

Some names that have been reportedly floated as Trump's potential VP picks include his former press secretary and now-Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders and Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina.
