  • Leonardo DiCaprio and Kim Kardashian were interviewed by the FBI in 2018 and 2019, Bloomberg reported.
  • The stars had received gifts from Jho Low, who is accused of masterminding the 1MDB scandal.
  • Earlier, DiCaprio had to return a number of gifts given to him by Low, including an Oscar won by Marlon Brando.

In 2013, Leonardo DiCaprio starred in "The Wolf of Wall Street," a film about a convicted fraudster, which was financed by a man later embroiled in a scandal surrounding Malaysia's sovereign wealth fund, 1MDB.

Jho Low, prosecutors say, masterminded the scandal which saw billions of government dollars channeled through shell companies and offshore bank accounts, and into the pockets of Low and his associates.

On Thursday, Bloomberg revealed previously undisclosed documents which show the FBI interviewing DiCaprio in 2018 about his relationship with Low.

Low lived a lavish lifestyle and rubbed shoulders with several celebrities. In 2018, The New York Times reported that DiCaprio had returned a number of gifts to authorities, including Marlon Brando's $600,000 Oscar, and a $9 million painting by Jean-Michel Basquiat, per ArtNet, which Low had given him.

That same year, DiCaprio told the FBI he'd been led to believe Low's money came from an unknown "whale of whales" in Abu Dhabi, per Bloomberg. The documents show the actor was sure his managers must have vetted Low before he helped finance "The Wolf of Wall Street," but the two still became friends.

FBI agents collected thousands of emails and BlackBerry messages between DiCaprio and Low, building a spreadsheet of all the gifts the actor received across five years, Bloomberg reported. The documents even note that Low called DiCaprio "L-Dizzle."

Kim Kardashian was also interviewed by the FBI about her interactions with Low in 2019. Kardashian recalled staying up until 5:00 a.m. in a Las Vegas casino with Low, and he refused her attempt to return $350,000 of winnings, which she later picked up in trash bags of $100 bills, the documents show.

On another occasion, Low offered to give Kardashian a Basquiat painting, but her then-husband Kanye West made her ask for a Monet instead. "Both Kardashian and West found Low to be very fickle when giving gifts and never expected to actually receive a painting from Low," the FBI document reads.

Representatives for Kardashian and DiCaprio did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment, sent outside normal working hours.
