- Here are some of the best memes to have come from the social-media chaos.
Twitter started removing legacy blue checkmarks on Thursday, as Elon Musk targeted what he described as a "deeply corrupted," "lords & peasants" system.
But the move seems to have backfired on the Twitter owner.
He may have hoped that the new policy would lead to large numbers of users signing up for Twitter Blue, an $8 monthly subscription featuring perks that allows you to edit tweets and test out new features, but so far it seems only to have fueled criticism.
Musk is even paying for certain celebrities to stay on Twitter Blue, including Stephen King, LeBron James, and William Shatner — all of whom either criticized the new arrangement or refused to pay.
Twitter has even added verified checks to dead celebrities' profiles, including Kobe Bryant, Anthony Bourdain, Chadwick Boseman, and Michael Jackson, making them look like paid subscribers.
Twitter's changes have sparked an inevitable backlash among users, with many crafting memes to criticize Musk and the company.
Insider browsed the social-media app for some of the best memes to have come out of the chaos. Here's a selection of our favorites:
