Here's what Tesla owners wish new EV buyers understood

"Just like anything, there is basic etiquette," said Nelson Jackson, a Model S owner. "Tesla etiquette is: Don't park next to someone else at a Supercharger because if you're sharing a stall, you just slowed down their charge."

Tesla charging stations have stalls that are labelled with a number and the letters "A" and "B." If two drivers are plugged into a stall with the same number (for example, 1A and 1B), it will cut the charging speed in half since both EVs will be taking from the same power source, according to Clean Technica.

The more chargers at a location, even if they're spaced out, the slower the overall charge will be as well.

Tesla owners say they often use the company's internal navigation system to find charging sites with less traffic to avoid slower chargers.

Tesla owners say it can be infuriating when another EV owner parks sloppily or takes up more than one space at a charging station.

Earlier this year, tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee said a Supercharger "descended into chaos" when it was opened to non-Tesla EVs that had to take up multiple spots in order to get the charging cord to reach the vehicle. Tesla has since updated some of the stations it opened to non-Tesla EVs with longer cords to help address the issue.

Most supercharging stations require Teslas to back into the spot for the Supercharger cord to reach the vehicle's charging port.

"You can always tell it's a new Model 3 owner when they try to pull forward into a spot," Nelson said. "It's pretty clear to everybody else that the stalls are perfectly designed to back into."

"It really bothers me when people just leave their cars at a charger and go off and do something else," tech YouTuber Austin Evans told Insider. "It's pretty inconsiderate — essentially using it as a parking spot when the battery is full."

Tesla owners receive alerts through the carmaker's app when their car has finished charging and the company also charges owners an "Idle Fee" at Superchargers of 50 cents per minute or $1 per minute when the station is at capacity.

"Most people with an ICE vehicle don't look at a manual because everything is pretty much the same across the board," Steve Almassy, a Model S owner, said, referring to a gas-powered car.

"With a Tesla, you basically have a computer on wheels that you have to figure out. So you need to take the time to sit down and go through all the things on the infotainment system and read up on all the new features or you'll be missing out."

John Brusniak, a 70-year-old Model S owner, said it took time to figure out how to activate some of the vehicles features, including car wash mode, a feature users can access via the car's infotainment system that closes all windows, locks the charge port, and disables windshield wipers.

Robbie Mack, a former Tesla salesman and owner of a Model S, said many new owners don't understand that its best for the vehicle to avoid charging it to 100%.

The car's battery will degrade faster if it's charged to 100% and it's best to keep it as close as possible to 50%, according to Clean Technica, which puts the ideal charge percentage at 80%.

Instead, Tesla owners can set the vehicle to stop charging around 80%. Tesla also recommends owners avoid keeping their vehicle's charge below 20% for an extended period of time.

Most cars come with a Level 1 charging cord, which can plug into a 110-volt household outlet and slowly trickles electricity into a car's battery, but it only adds a few miles an hour to the car's battery life.

Many drivers prefer faster methods. A Level 2 home charger can charge the vehicle to 80% between four to 10 hours, according to the Department of Transportation. It can cost between $250 to a few thousand dollars to set up, but can save owners $1,000 to $1,200 per year in fuel costs, according to Consumer Reports.

Many Tesla owners compare charging their EV to plugging in their phone at night — simple and efficient.

Over the years, EV owners have shared horror stories about trying to find chargers on long road trips.

While Tesla owners possess a distinct advantage when it comes to using the Supercharger network over far less reliable public chargers, Tesla owners say it's important to plan well ahead for charging stations on road trips.

"If you don't plan ahead you could easily get stranded," said Nick Caraciolo, a Model 3 owner based in Canada. "You need to be aware of where all the stations are along the way and plan your stops accordingly. I've gotten to the point where my backup stations have backups."
