Tesla's Model S, a luxury family sedan, is the EV maker's oldest vehicle still in production. It costs nearly $90,000 for the most basic version, and Tesla claims it's the most aerodynamic production car on Earth.
Tesla delivered the first Model S to a customer in June 2012. Later that year, the vehicle was named Car of the Year by Motor Trend magazine. It was the first time in the award's 63-year history that it was won by an EV and also the first time the jury chose a winner by unanimous decision.
The five-seater Model S remains popular among drivers. The company also sells an upgraded version, the Model S Plaid, which is faster – and considerably more expensive.
How fast is the Model S?
The dual-motor vehicle can go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 3.1 seconds and can reach a top speed of 149 miles per hour, Tesla said.
In comparison, the Model S Plaid's 0-60 time is 1.99 seconds, and it has a top speed of 200 miles per hour when equipped with paid hardware upgrades.
Tesla said the vehicle has 670 horsepower. The Model S Plaid has a significantly higher horsepower of 1,020.
How far can the Model S go?
Tesla says the vehicle is built "for speed, endurance and range." The Model S has an EPA-estimated range of 405 miles, though this changes depending on which tires it has, among other things.
How much does it cost?
The Model S is toward the upper bound of Tesla's price range, with the most basic version starting at $88,490, which is more than double the cost of the cheapest Tesla model. Tesla adds on destination and order fees, too.
It costs an extra $20,000 to upgrade to a Model S Plaid.
Tesla also offers a whole suite of customizations and add-ons that can push the price up by thousands of dollars.
Like Tesla's other vehicles, white is the standard color for the Model S. To get it in blue, black, or silver costs an additional $1,500, while red carries an extra $3,000 price tag. And though the white Tesla interior is standard, you can get a black and white or cream interior for $2,000.
You can also upgrade to a yoke steering wheel for $250 and 21-inch Arachnid Wheels for $4,500, though the latter brings down the estimated range.
And to charge your Model S, it costs $475 to add on a wall connector and $230 to include a mobile connector.
As with Tesla's other vehicles, the Model S comes with Autopilot as standard. Adding on Enhanced Autopilot costs $6,000, while Full Self-Driving comes in at an additional $15,000.
