  • The Tesla Model Y is surging in popularity.
  • It recently became the world's best-selling vehicle.
  • Here's what to know about the Tesla Model Y's price, features, and range before buying.

The Tesla Model Y is selling well, to say the least: The small SUV hit the market in 2020 and is already the single best-selling car on Earth.

We're not talking about just electric cars here. The Model Y beat out beloved, gas-powered rides like the Toyota RAV4 and Corolla to become the world's most popular model — period — in the first quarter of 2023, according to data compiled by market research firm JATO Dynamics.

Here's what to know if you're in the market for a Model Y.

How much does a Tesla Model Y cost?

The Model Y's starting price is $47,740.

The Model Y is the second-cheapest of the Tesla models. There are three different options, which vary in price, driving range, and performance.

The entry-level Model Y costs $47,740. Next up is the Model Y Long Range, which will run you $50,490 and up. The Model Y Performance is the priciest of the bunch, starting at $54,490.

What features do you get for the price?

Across the lineup, you get respectable range, a minimalist cabin, lots of cargo space, and the dazzling technology that Tesla is known for. The Model Y Long Range has a $3,000, seven-seat option for larger families.

Range is one of the biggest considerations for EV buyers, and the Model Y's Environmental Protection Agency estimates are as follows: 279 miles for the base SUV, 330 miles for the Long Range, and 303 for the Performance.

All Teslas are known for their speedy acceleration and athletic handling, but the Performance version kicks things up a notch. With it you get a lowered suspension, upgraded brakes, and more power. Tesla says it can scoot to 60 mph in a brief 3.5 seconds.

The Model Y has the typically uncluttered Tesla interior, which is practically button-free. Practically all vehicle settings are accessed through the SUV's iPad-like touchscreen, or through voice commands. The crisp display shows basics like your speed and provides access to all the high-tech Tesla features the company is famous for, like Dog Mode (which keeps the cabin cool for furry friends), a web browser, and a built-in navigation system that makes it easy to find Tesla's Supercharger stations.

The Tesla Model Y's downsides include a lack of Apple CarPlay or Android Auto — Tesla forces you to use its interface — and an interior that doesn't quite stand up to luxury rivals like Lexus and BMW.

Does Tesla's Model Y qualify for the new EV tax credit?

Yes. Buyers can get a $7,500 tax credit on Model Y purchases if they don't exceed income caps of $150,000 per year for individuals, $225,000 for heads of households, or $300,000 for married couples.

Does Tesla sell a bigger SUV?

The Tesla Model X SUV is quite a bit larger and more expensive. It's at the top of Tesla's price range, with a starting price tag of $98,490. It's available with five, six, or seven seats.

It has slightly more range than the Model Y, sporting an EPA estimate of 348 miles. It's also the only SUV you can buy with wacky, falcon-wing doors that swing upward, making the Model X look like some kind of spaceship.
