- Donald Trump is likely facing financial trouble over legal fees accumulated in the last two years.
- This NYT analysis came after his Save America PAC requested a $60 million refund.
- Save America has served as a legal fund for Trump, contributing over $40 million to legal bills.
In the last two years, former President Donald Trump has incurred tens of millions in legal fees. Now, he's likely facing financial problems as his legal woes continue, The New York Times reports.
This analysis comes as Trump's Save America political action committee — which has fronted many of his legal fees — requested a refund on a $60 million contribution they made to another PAC aligned with Trump, the Times reports. Meanwhile, Save America has already spent upwards of $40 million on Trump's legal fees, the outlet reported.
Trump is also diverting a greater percentage of his donations towards legal bills. While Trump used to divert $.01 from every dollar donated to the Save America PAC, that contribution increased last month to $.10 for every dollar donated.
Trump has been making notably expensive payments towards legal fees for several months. In November, he paid a $3 million lawyer retainer fee — likely the largest sum he's paid for a lawyer, Insider reported.
Maggie Haberman — a New York Times reporter who has covered Trump for decades — said the fee likely indicated he knew he was in sizeable legal danger.
And Haberman was right, as Trump now faces indictments in two separate cases — on on charges that he falsified business records related to a payment made to Stormy Daniels, and again in Florida on charges he retained classified documents when he left office.
Meanwhile, on July 27, Trump's lawyers met with special counsel Jack Smith — who is investigating the January 6, 2021 capitol riots — over a possible third indictment. The former president is also under investigation regarding 2020 election interference in Georgia.
