Foreign transaction fees are fees you may be charged if you use a debit card internationally.

When you use your debit card abroad, you'll probably have to pay a foreign transaction fee.

There are two main types of foreign transaction fees: one for buying something with your debit card, and one for using an ATM abroad.

Debit card issuers Visa and Mastercard both charge 1% foreign transaction fees. Many institutions require you to cover this fee, and some charge an extra percentage on top of that. For an ATM transaction, some banks charge the fee they'd normally impose for using an out-of-network ATM fee on top of the normal percentage they charge for foreign transactions.

Other institutions take care of the debit card issuer fees for you. That's why some accounts charge a foreign transaction fee, and others don't.
