Russia's Luna-25 lander was set to beat India to be the first to land on the lunar south pole. But something went wrong during its descent.
  • Russia's Luna-25 spacecraft crashed into the moon's surface, ending its mission.
  • The country was racing India to be the first country to land a spacecraft on the lunar's south pole.
  • The moon's south pole likely contains frozen water that could be used to produce air and rocket fuel.

Russia's Luna-25 spacecraft crashed into the moon after it spun into an uncontrolled orbit, the country's Roscosmos space agency said Sunday.
