- Federal prosecutors are charging Sen. Robert Menendez in a cartoonish bribery and corruption scandal.
- The feds allege Menendez helped a trio of businessmen and Egypt in exchange for — among other things — gold bars.
- Menendez previously faced corruption charges in 2017, but the case was dropped.
New Jersey Sen. Robert Menendez is facing charges over allegations of bribery and corruption once again, federal prosecutors announced Friday.
In the indictment from the US Attorney's Office in the Southern District of New York, federal officials accused Menendez of helping a trio of Egyptian businessmen in exchange for bribes — including bars of gold.
Menendez's wife, Nadine Menendez, has also been charged in the indictment.

It's not the first time Menendez has been federally investigated.
In 2017, Menendez was accused of bribery, making him the first senator to go on trial for the accusation in 36 years. But those charges were eventually dropped after jurors in the case couldn't reach a verdict and a judge declared a mistrial.
