Are robot vacuums worth it?
I've tested robot vacuums professionally for five years — using them everywhere in my three-story home — and found that a basic upright vacuum works better for deep cleaning your floor, including getting into corners and along baseboards.
Robot vacuums are useful for light day-to-day cleaning, especially if you have pets or are sensitive to dust and other debris. However, they lack the power and capacity of the best vacuum cleaners. Basically, get a robot vacuum if you have the extra money and need help keeping up with daily floor cleaning, but hold onto your upright for occasional deep cleaning.
A good budget robot vacuum is the iRobot Roomba 692, currently $164.99 at Amazon. I haven't tested it, but iRobot has a track record of high-level performance.
How do other brands compare to Roomba?
iRobot's Roomba has set the standard for robot vacuums. Roombas hold top spots in our buying guide because they consistently have strong suction, the latest technology, and a feature-rich app. Other brands are catching up, though. Two brands I've been impressed with lately are Roborock and Ecovacs. Both brands offer high-quality robot vacuums at various price points with innovations that rival the Roomba.
For example, the Roborock S7 Max Ultra Boost takes automation to the next level. It automatically mops and vacuums your floor, emptying the debris in the charging dock, so you only have to change out the water or replace the dirtbag every two weeks or so. It's currently $300 off at Amazon, only the second time it's ever been on sale.
