Google Pixel Watch 2: new features
The Pixel Watch 2 ushers in a number of upgrades over its predecessor, the first-generation Pixel Watch, that appear to make it a solid blend of being both a Google smartwatch and a Fitbit fitness tracker.
These include things like a brand new heart rate sensor and AI-powered heart rate measurements, stress management detection and intervention, and new fitness features like automatic start/stop, pace training customization, and heart rate zone training. It also offers battery life of up to 24 hours on a single charge with the always-on display turned on and can recharge to a full day's worth of battery in 75 minutes.
Google is also introducing a number of new safety features on the Pixel Watch 2 including Safety Check, a tool that allows users to input a specific timer for when they need to check in with family members or friends. Once the timer expires, they can simply hit the "OK" button to confirm safety, or they can choose to call emergency services or share their location.
There's also a new Safety Signal tool that provides safety feature access to any watch, regardless of whether it's LTE-enabled or not. However, this is only available to Fitbit Premium subscribers but all new purchases do come with six months of Fitbit Premium for free.
A number of health features are available on the Pixel Watch 2 such as in-depth sleep tracking, ECG readings, and blood oxygen monitoring, as well as skin temperature sensing. Some advanced health features, like the Sleep Profile tool, are only accessible via a Fitbit Premium membership.
The watch uses the new Wear OS 4 operating system and gets call, text, email, and app notifications, in addition to support for Google Maps, Google Assistant, and Google Pay. It will be compatible not just with Google Pixel smartphones but with other Android-based devices such as the Samsung Galaxy.
Google also introduced a new line of interchangeable bands alongside the Pixel Watch 2 which includes slim metal-linked bands, as well as active sport bands.
