Portable generators vs. whole-house generators: What's the difference?

The generator you purchase comes down to cost and power use. A portable generator is generally much cheaper than a whole-house generator, with prices starting at $500. They typically run on gas and require a manual connection to your home's circuit-breaker panel during an emergency. Portable generators also have a smaller power output, which may not be suitable for homes that experience lengthy power outages.

A whole-house generator is much more permanent. This generator is installed on your property outside the home and often connects to your home's natural gas line if you have one. Permanent installation means this generator will switch on automatically during an outage, so you'll never have to worry about losing power, even when you're out of the house. But with this peace of mind comes a big price tag. Whole house generators are more expensive than their portable counterparts, so expect to pay in the thousands for these generators.

Is Prime Day a good time to buy a generator?

Yes. We're seeing rare discounts on power generators during Prime Day that won't last long. We haven't seen these price drops in over a year, so now is a good time to pick up a generator.
