Being single in America can cost you.

People living alone have been facing a "singles tax" that can hike living costs by thousands of dollars per year. Couples save money on both rent and expenses, while single people are often left to bear the burden of rising living costs alone.

However, some of these costs could be mitigated by where single people choose to live, a new report by rental platform Zumper has found.

The company evaluated around 100 top cities on the median rent price, percentage of single population, cost of living, median income, unemployment rate, and access to dining and entertainment.

Georgia city Atlanta topped the list as the best city for single people.

The study found that more than 57% of Atlanta's population is single and the city offers many entertainment options to meet potential partners. The city does have higher-than-average rent costs for 1-bedroom properties, but balances this with a median non-family income that's higher than the national average.
