Emmett Shear is the second interim CEO of OpenAI in three days.
  • Emmett Shear laid out a three-point plan for his first 30 days as CEO in an X post at 1 a.m.
  • He plans to hire an independent investigator to examine the events that led to Sam Altman's ousting.
  • Shear also said he's going to change the management and leadership team due to "recent departures".

Emmett Shear already has his first month as OpenAI's new boss mapped out.

The interim CEO revealed plans for his 30 days in in a X post at 1 a.m. PT – including hiring an investigator and restructuring the leadership team.

The Twitch cofounder's three-point plan came just hours after Shear became OpenAI's second temporary chief in the space of three days.

OpenAI's former CTO, Mira Murati, briefly became interim CEO Friday after the board removed Sam Altman.

Shear included hiring an independent investigator in his first tasks in the post, which also criticized OpenAI's board for its handling of Altman's departure.

The investigator would examine and report on the events that led to the OpenAI cofounder being pushed out.

The second point of his plan includes continuing to engage with stakeholders such as employees, partners, investors, and customers. Shear also announced his intention to shake up the management and leadership team "in light of recent departures".

At least three top OpenAI researchers have resigned after Altman was pushed out. Jakub Pachocki, the director of research; Aleksander Madry, the head of a team that analyzes AI risks; and Szymon Sidor, another researcher have all quit, according to The Information.

"Depending on the results everything we learn from these, I will drive changes in the organization — up to and including pushing strongly for significant governance changes if necessary," Shear said in the X post. "I will be rolling these out as they become clear over the 30 day period."

He continued: "OpenAI's stability and success are too important to allow turmoil to disrupt them like this. I will endeavor to address the key concerns as well, although in many cases I believe it may take longer than a month to achieve true progress."

OpenAI employees were informed Sunday that Altman would not be returning, The Verge reported. Hours later Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said he Altman was joining the tech giant.

Seemingly protesting the decision to oust Altman, some OpenAI workers staff have posted on X that the company is "nothing without its people."

OpenAI didn't respond to a request for comment from Business Insider, made outside normal working hours.
