China, Taiwan
  • China wants to annex Taiwan and is threatening war.
  • Beijing is likely to follow a two-and-a-half-thousand-year-old military theory.
  • Taiwanese islands would be the first target. For the West, this would be a test case with serious consequences.

On the beach of the Taiwanese island of Kinmen, pointed metal rods protrude from the ground and point towards the sea. They are intended to prevent enemy troops from landing here. There are concrete bunkers with narrow embrasures in the dunes. They also face the sea.

From the beach you can see the enemy territory against which these defences are intended: China. The Chinese metropolis of Xiamen is only 2.4 kilometres away from Kinmen at its narrowest point. The skyline glistens in the sunlight on the horizon.
