- Tesla has updated its Model 3 for the first time in years.
- The "Highland" refresh includes more range and new colors for the same price.
- The overhaul comes at a pivotal time for Tesla, which last year lost its EV crown to BYD.
After first launching in China and Europe, Tesla's first major design refresh in years is now available in North America.
The updated Model 3 won't be any more expensive, surprisingly, and comes with a number of new features.
What's new in the 'highland' refresh:
341 estimated miles of range (up from 333 miles)
Two new paint colors: "stealth gray" and "ultra red"
Upgraded wheels, which Tesla says help improve range and reduce road noise
Ambient lighting in an updated interior with wraparound styling
8-inch rear display for back-seat passengers
More exterior glass for 360 degrees of light and UV protection, Tesla says
These are all in addition to Tesla's previously available features
Pricing of the new Model 3:
The Model 3 starts at $38,990 for the rear-wheel drive option, which is also eligible for $7,500 in federal EV tax credits. That discount can now be taken at the store, rather than waiting for tax time.
The dual-motor, all-wheel drive version starts at $45,990 and is eligible for half of the federal tax credits, or $3,750.
The refresh comes at a pivotal time for Tesla. Despite still being the market leader in the US by a massive margin, the company has been forced to drastically cut prices on many of its models as new competition from traditional automakers and upstarts siphon off potential customers.
Earlier this year, China's BYD surpassed Tesla in overall sales to become the world's most popular EV maker.
