Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed on Tuesday morning after a large cargo ship hit one of the bridge's support beams.

The vessel that crashed into the bridge is the Dali, a Singapore-flagged container ship, according to a listing on VesselFinder.

Authorities are calling the incident, which was captured on a livestream and shared online, a "mass causality event."

Maryland Governor Wes Moore, declared a state of emergency early on Tuesday, while The White House said it is "closely monitoring" the situation.

Governor Moore said Tuesday that the ship's crew notified authorities that they had lost power in a mayday call shortly before it hit the bridge.

Eight people are believed to have fallen into the water, all of whom are believed to have been working on the bridge at the time.

Two have been recovered, with one in a "very serious condition," James Wallace, chief of the Baltimore Fire Department, said in a press conference early Tuesday.

Moore said his office was in close communication with Pete Buttigieg, the US transportation secretary.

He said: "We are working with an interagency team to quickly deploy federal resources from the Biden Administration."

Moore said authorities were able to stop cars from going over the bridge after the crew's distress call, per the Associated Press.

"These people are heroes," he said. "They saved lives last night."

Senior White House officials are in touch with both Moore and Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott "to offer any federal assistance they need," CNN's Betsy Klein said on X.
