Jenn Tran's season of "The Bachelorette" is underway, and the competition among the men is getting more intense each week.
Sam McKinney, one of the 25 guys competing on season 21, quickly hit it off with Jenn on night one and earned the first impression rose.
While Sam and Jenn had strong physical chemistry, their relationship was tested during a one-on-one date in Auckland, New Zealand, when he spoke on her behalf and said they would jump off the Sky Tower together despite Jenn's fear of heights.
While that night concluded with Jenn feeling confident about their emotional connection, a disastrous group date to a radio station during week six led Jen to send Sam home before the rose ceremony.
Here's everything to know about Sam M., his time on "The Bachelorette," and where he is now.
Sam M. is a general contractor from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
Sam, 27, is one of five children. He attended Socastee High School, where he was on the football, baseball, and wrestling teams. After graduating, he attended Wofford College.
According to his bio on ABC's website, outside his work as a contractor, Sam enjoys "riding motorcycles, golfing, and watching 'Sons of Anarchy.'" Based on his Instagram profile, he seems to be a dog lover, too.
Prior to "The Bachelorette," Sam was single for almost a year.
During the season premiere, he explained that his fiancé, who he had known since middle school, cheated on him and there was "no repairing that relationship."
"That was definitely the biggest heartbreak I've ever experienced," he said.
Despite this, Sam is still determined to fulfill his dream of being a husband and father.
Jenn gave Sam her first impression rose after feeling an 'undeniable connection'
Sam didn't have an over-the-top limo entrance, but Jenn was immediately taken by his looks and "Southern charm."
During their one-on-one conversation, the first of the evening, Jenn and Sam bonded over their similar approaches to dating; they both value being intentional and vulnerable in relationships.
"Sam M. makes me feel excited," Jenn said. "There's an undeniable connection and I don't know what it is. I'm looking at how hot he is and I definitely want to kiss him, but it just doesn't feel right in that moment."
After chatting with the other men, Jenn gave her first impression rose to Sam, whom she said she couldn't stop thinking about all night. They shared a passionate kiss, making Jenn even more confident in her choice to give him the rose.
"I feel like I'm floating on cloud nine," she said. "This kiss is feral. The kiss was really, really good. I feel like I made the right decision in waiting because this was the kiss that had been building up all night. Definitely worth the wait."
Sam's family has been defending him on social media since the season started airing
Jenn and Sam's differing approaches to their date in Auckland created a tense environment. Sam emphasized that he wanted her to be "comfortable being uncomfortable" and conquer her fears by jumping off the Sky Tower, but Jenn felt that Sam was being dismissive and unsupportive.
After the date aired, Sam and his family accused the show of giving him a bad edit. A teaser for the aforementioned episode, posted on Instagram by the official "Bachelorette" account, resulted in Sam's siblings coming to his defense in the comments section.
"Crazy how they can cut out so much detail to make a person look shallow while making others look like a king…" Seth McKinney, Sam's brother, wrote.
"Let's see all the footage @bacheloretteabc…. I'm waiting ⏱️," Hannah McKinney, his sister chimed in.
Hannah replied to additional comments, telling one user that Sam "isn't a bully and never has been" and the show omitted the "true context" of the situation.
"I will defend my brother day in and day out just like anybody else would," she said. "Especially when they are being portrayed as somebody they're not."
Sam, for his part, commented on the teaser, "💨 and 🪞," seemingly likening it to a smoke and mirrors situation.
Sam's parents, Susan and Jeff McKinney, also appeared to defend him and criticize the show in comments that have since been deleted from their Facebook profiles.
Jenn reacted to the accusations of Sam getting a bad edit during a recent appearance on the podcast "Love to See It With Emma and Claire."
"No one can give you a villain edit in some way, which is what people are claiming," Jenn said. "You have to own your words, because no one's putting words in your mouth. You are the person that's saying those things. What I will say is that sometimes you just gotta take responsibility for the things that are coming out of your mouth."
Sam spoke out after his elimination, saying it was 'tough' to watch
Sam was a frontrunner in the competition and was confident that he'd be able to take Jenn home to meet his family for hometown dates. But a disastrous group date to a radio show in Seattle during week six changed all that.
While answering questions on air, it became clear to Jenn that Sam didn't know her very well. When she and Sam were given extra time to get to know each other and ask each other questions, Jenn was unsatisfied by what she viewed as his inauthentic answers. Sam even told Jenn that she initially wasn't his type, and that he thought Daisy Kent or Maria Georgas was going to be the Bachelorette.
Jenn gave Sam more chances to express his feelings for her, but he continued giving confusing, frustrating answers, telling her, "I love you," without being able to verbalize what exactly she meant to him. After multiple unproductive conversations, Jenn sent him home.
After the episode aired, Sam spoke about his elimination in a video posted on Instagram.
"As tough as this was to watch, I'm thankful," he wrote in the caption. "Jenn's fearlessness in all aspects of this process showed me that it was possible for me to open myself back up after my past."
"I wish I was able to truly show how I felt in that moment right there, but that love that I carry is visceral, it's instinctive, and it's beyond description," he said in the video.
Even though his journey on the reality TV show ended, Sam said that he was thankful for the fans who have continued supporting him.
"That was not easy watching, so y'all's kindness has gone so much farther than what you know for me and for my family," he said. '"And to my family, I love you guys. Thank you."
New episodes of season 21 of "The Bachelorette" premiere on Mondays on ABC and stream the next day on Hulu.
