Business Insider published a series of stories this summer about illegal evictions, or "lockouts", where landlords circumvent the legal court process to remove tenants from their homes.
We found enforcement of anti-lockout laws has deep flaws. Police rarely write up reports when tenants call 911 over an illegal eviction, and almost never make arrests. We found that tenants are the ones stuck with the responsibility for upholding their rights — and they face steep challenges in pursuing legal action.
BI is continuing its investigation of controversial practices by corporate landlords. In recent years, big players have come under scrutiny over how they set rents, charge fees, remove residents, or fail to maintain their units.
