"Big Little Lies" star Shailene Woodley can't say much about season three of the hit HBO drama series — not because she's being secretive, but because she has limited information.

"I know as much as you do," Woodley, who stars as Jane Chapman, told Business Insider in the latest installment of our "Role Play" interview series.

"Big Little Lies," based on Liane Moriarty's novel of the same name, debuted in 2017. Since season two concluded in the summer of 2019, fans have been wondering about the possibility of a third season.

Back in 2022, Zoë Kravitz said that a third season seemed unlikely following the death of the show's original director and executive producer, Jean-Marc Vallée. (Andrea Arnold directed season two, but Valée stayed on as an executive producer.)

"I just can't imagine going on without him," Kravitz told GQ. "He really was the visionary for that show. So, unfortunately, it's done."

Reese Witherspoon expressed similar comments in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that year, but added that "there is certainly a deep desire for all of us to connect and create those characters again."

Then, in November 2023, Nicole Kidman said that a third season was in the works.

In the months since, Witherspoon and Kidman, who are both executive producers, have continued doling out crumbs of information and reiterating that a third season is still happening.

But Woodley, like fans, remains skeptical until she actually receives more substantial information.

"I don't even know if it's officially in the works," she told BI. "I thought it was still just a rumor, but everybody, all of us, do want it to happen. We all still text each other quite often saying, 'Can't wait for season three.'"

"It feels a little bit like a fun fantasy dream that hopefully happens, but I can't say concretely whether it is or isn't happening," Woodley added.

Most recently, Witherspoon and Kidman provided an update, telling Vanity Fair, "We're moving fast and furious. Liane is delivering the book. We're in good shape."

"That's the information that I have as well," Woodley said.
