Preorders are open for Apple's new yellow iPhone 14 — here's a hands-on look at the new colorway

This week, Apple added a new canary yellow color option to its iPhone 14 lineup. Available for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, the new color is available for preorder today and goes on sale on March 14.

Yellow joins midnight (black), starlight (white), red, blue, and purple. The color covers nearly the entire rear and sides of the phone, including the glass back and edges around the cameras and front display.

The specs and features of the yellow iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus remain the same, which you can read about in our reviews of both devices. Both models have the same performance as the iPhone 13 but have slightly enhanced cameras and two new, potentially life-saving features: Emergency SOS via satellite and crash detection. New for the yellow iPhone 14 is a matching wallpaper for the home screen.

We had some hands-on time with the yellow iPhone 14. Other than the color, it looks and feels like any iPhone 14 and the iPhone 13. Under certain lighting conditions, the yellow on the metal looks a bit like gold, while the glass transitions between light and Big Bird yellow. It's not the first time Apple has introduced a yellow iPhone: both the iPhone XR and iPhone 11 had a yellow option.

If you like the new color but prefer to cover a phone with a case, Apple also unveiled yellow silicone cases with MagSafe support. If you already own an iPhone 14 or iPhone 14 Pro model, the case is one way to get into the new color without buying a new phone. In related news, Apple announced that Emergency SOS via satellite and Find My via satellite will roll out to six more countries, including Austria, Belgium, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Portugal. The safety features are included in the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus for two years.
