Some sibling rivalries are purely playful, competitive one-upmanship, but others have ended up in court.

While it's impossible to expect brothers and sisters to get along all the time — no matter how famous they are — some siblings will inevitably put the past in the past. Oasis band members Liam and Noel Gallagher, for example, are reportedly in talks to be reuniting in concert next year to the tune of more than £400 million in profits, The Sun reported.

Here are 13 of the most epic sibling rivalries of all time.

Actresses Olivia de Havilland and Joan Fontaine didn't speak to each other for 40 years.

Olivia de Havilland and Joan Fontaine had a sibling rivalry that lasted decades.

The New York Post reported that from a young age, actresses and sisters Olivia de Havilland and Joan Fontaine competed for men, acting gigs, and even the attention of their mother.

The sisters were even up for the same best actor Oscar in 1942 when Joan won out over Olivia, though Olivia eventually won her own Oscar. Afterward, the latter reportedly refused to congratulate her sister on the award.

The second big snub came in 1975 when Joan called out Olivia for supposedly failing to notify her sister of their mother's death, to which Olivia replied that Joan would've been too busy to attend the funeral anyway, Time reported.

The sisters gave each other the silent treatment for the next 40 or so years until Joan's death in December 2013.

The singing trio LaVerne, Patty, and Maxene Andrews had a decadeslong feud.

LaVerne Andrews, Patty Andrews, and Maxine Andrews had hit songs together before falling out.

Their careers were built on harmonizing together, but the Andrews Sisters weren't always as bright and cheery as their songs. Known for hits like "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy," the Andrews Sisters were one of the most successful female recording groups in pop history.

So it's strange — or maybe natural — that their success is clouded by a decadeslong feud. Maxene once chalked their intense loathing for one another up to too many years of working too closely together.

However, it may not have helped that Patty reportedly joined another singing group in 1951 without telling her sisters, and believed that their diehard fans didn't care about the feud at all.

"When I start singing the Andrews Sisters songs, they don't give a damn whether I talk to my sister or not," she told The Los Angeles Times in 1987.

All three Andrews sisters have now died.

Britney Spears publicly feuded with her sister, Jamie Lynn Spears.

Britney and Jamie Lynn Spears have sparred back and forth over the years.

Britney and Jamie Lynn Spears came to blows over social media after both the Grammy Award winner and her younger sister spoke out about the singer's 13-year-long conservatorship, which was terminated in 2021.

Britney Spears has been critical of her family's role in the conservatorship for a long time, saying during her explosive June 2021 hearing that she wanted to take legal action against her family.

"I just want my life back. It's been 13 years, and it's enough. It's been a long time since I've owned my money," Spears said at the time. "I would honestly like to sue my family, to be totally honest with you. I also would like to be able to share my story with the world, and what they did to me, instead of it being a hush-hush secret to benefit all of them."

In a January 2022 interview with "Good Morning America," Jamie Lynn said, "I love my sister. I've only ever loved and supported her, and done what's right by her, and she knows that. So I don't know why we're in this position right now."

But in her memoir, "Things I Should Have Said," which was released in 2022, the actor wrote about her childhood and altercations she had with the "Toxic" singer, including a time she said her sister locked them both in a room while Britney held a knife while saying she was "scared," The New York Post reported.

Britney denied the incident ever happened, writing on X, "I've never been around you ever with a knife or would I ever even think to do such !!!"

Us Weekly reported that Britney's lawyer later said in a cease-and-desist letter to Jamie Lynn, "Although Britney has not read and does not intend to read your book, she and millions of her fans were shocked to see how you have exploited her for monetary gain. She will not tolerate it, nor should she."

Britney alleged in a since-deleted Instagram post that her childhood was drastically different from her younger sister's and that Jamie Lynn wasn't there for her after her public breakup with Justin Timberlake, calling her a "selfish little brat."

However, Britney later shared kinder words for her sister in her 2023 memoir, "The Woman In Me," writing, "She will always be my sister, and I love her and her beautiful family."

She added, "I'm working to feel more compassion than anger toward her, and everyone who I feel has wronged me. It's not easy."

Former Oasis band members Liam and Noel Gallagher's rivalry ended the brothers up in court, but they appear to be reuniting.

Oasis band members Noel and Liam Gallagher may be reuniting.

When you're two brothers playing in a successful rock band, bickering comes with the territory, but for former Oasis members Liam and Noel Gallagher, their bickering landed them in court.

In 2009, Noel accused Liam of pulling out of the band's headlining gig at the V Festival in England due to the fact that Liam was hungover — something Liam said was untrue, Time reported.

Liam took his brother to high court in 2011, blaming him for Oasis' breakup. Liam maintained that the reason he dropped out of the gig was a case of laryngitis, and he wanted to set the record straight for Oasis fans.

Liam later served as the front man for post-Oasis band Beady Eye until the band's dissolution and then became a solo artist. Noel also had a solo career. When asked in 2014 about the possibility of an Oasis reunion, Noel told The Guardian that it's never going to happen. "Unless they're doing it without me," he said, "But without me, it would be rubbish."

In the last few years, their feud has continued. In September 2019, Liam Gallagher called out Noel for "slagging off" young fans wanting an Oasis reunion, calling him "ungrateful," Metro reported.

However, the bandmates appear to have reconciled recently and are in the midst of planning a series of reunion shows in the UK next summer, The Sun reported.

Liam first sparked rumors of a reconciliation with his brother after posting "I never did like that word former" on X.

Nick, Kevin, and Joe Jonas of the Jonas Brothers broke up to pursue their own careers before reuniting in 2019.

Sibling trio Nick, Kevin, and Joe Jonas signed as The Jonas Brothers with Hollywood Records in 2007 and sold millions of records to adoring, mostly female, fans. However, in October 2013 the band abruptly canceled their 19-city tour due to a "deep rift within the band."

The Jonas Brothers broke up shortly after to pursue their own careers, putting the future of their 10th album, "V," in jeopardy, The Independent reported. It wasn't the first time the guys went separate ways; the band took a three-year hiatus but then got back together.

They released five songs from "V" as part of a live album before officially splitting. Joe Jonas went on to join the band DNCE, which received worldwide fame for their hit song "Cake By the Ocean."

In February 2019, the Jonas Brothers returned with their first single in six years, the catchy hit "Sucker," complete with a music video. The reunited band released their sixth studio album, "The Album," in May 2023.

Kelly Osbourne said in 2021 that she didn't talk to her older sister, Aimee.

During an interview on Dax Shepard's "Armchair Expert" podcast in May 2021, Osbourne opened up about her relationship with her older sister, Aimee, revealing that they did not communicate.

"We don't talk," Kelly said. "We're just really different. She doesn't understand me and I don't understand her."

Unlike Kelly Osbourne and her other siblings, Aimee never appeared on the famous family's reality show, "The Osbournes." She said that appearing on the show "didn't really line up with what I saw my future as."

"It definitely worked great for the rest of my family, but for me, and who I am, I just knew it was never something that I would have been able to consider realistically," Aimee told New York's Q1043 radio program in August 2020, People reported.

Christopher Ciccone and Madonna stopped speaking before his memoir, "Life With My Sister Madonna," was released.

Christopher Ciccone and Madonna worked together before their feud.

Madonna and her brother Christopher Ciccone worked pretty closely together as she launched her career — he's been her assistant, stylist, and artistic director at one time or another — but the two stopped speaking right before his 2008 memoir, "Life With My Sister Madonna," hit shelves.

The Guardian reported that the book details intimate information about Madonna's ex-husband, kids, and career, among other things that didn't sit too well with the "Material Girl."

Madonna and Christopher continued not speaking for another five or six years, but reportedly were "back to being brother and sister," Christopher told The Huffington Post in 2012.

However, in 2017, the feud was reignited after Christopher claimed Madonna had "blacklisted" him from Hollywood, calling her "horrific," Page Six reported.

However, they have been on better terms in recent years.

"We are at peace now and just spoke last week," Christopher told Radar in 2019. "I recently moved from Los Angeles back to Michigan where my father and family own a vineyard and winery ... She regularly speaks to our dad while some of our siblings work at the winery. We are all united."

Kim and Kourtney Kardashian had an infamous fight on their reality show "Keeping Up With The Kardashians."

Kim and Kourtney Kardashian had a physical fight on their reality show.

"Keeping Up With The Kardashians" was no stranger to drama, but things came to a head in season 18 when Kim Kardashian and her older sister Kourtney got into a physical fight while the cameras were rolling.

Kim Kardashian and sister Khloé Kardashian have been longtime critics of Kourtney's work ethic and "attitude," often criticizing her for being less available for filming and not prioritizing the show.

In the scene, which aired in March 2020, Kim praised how she and Khloé Kardashian "always show up" for work commitments, while Kourtney doesn't "care about stuff."

Kourtney responded, saying, "You act like I don't do s---. You have this narrative in your mind. No, no, no, I will literally f--- you up if you mention it again."

The fight then turned physical, with both sisters swinging at each other.

"I don't really ever resort to violence like that, but she scratched me so hard," Kim told Jimmy Fallon in March 2020. "You didn't really get to see that detail."

However, despite the dramatic moment, the sisters seem to be on better terms now and continue to work together on their new reality show, "The Kardashians," on Hulu.

Prince William and Prince Harry have always been known for their friendly competition, but when Harry left royal life behind, an actual feud followed.
prince william prince harry
Prince William and Prince Harry have had tense relations ever since Harry left the royal family to pursue a life of "independence."

Competition between older and younger siblings is inherent in nature — the older one is almost always first to do everything, and for British royals Prince William and Prince Harry, that also includes becoming king.

Rumors of a sibling rivalry have been around for quite a while. A 2014 biography of Prince Harry by royal correspondent Marcia Moody revealed a different side of the relationship, claiming that Prince Harry realized that he had more freedom than his brother, the future king.

According to Moody, at 6 years old, Prince Harry told his brother, "You'll be King, I won't; so I can do what I want!" But the two grew up side-by-side yet rather independently, and their rivalry never really amounted to more than friendly competition between brothers.

The media then turned its attention toward a supposed rivalry between the brothers' wives, the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton and the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle.

In January 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced they would be "stepping back" from their roles as senior royals and would become "financially independent."

The pair later moved to California. In a bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey that aired on March 7, 2021, they detailed the strain the split has put on Prince Harry's relationship with his brother.

A few days later, William told the press he hadn't spoken to Harry since the interview. In light of Harry and Markle's claims, he said that the royal family is "very much not a racist family."

Though the brothers reunited during Prince Philip's funeral and their father's coronation, their relationship still appears to be strained especially in the wake of Prince Harry's memoir, "Spare," which described a physical altercation between the two brothers.

Jim and John Harbaugh, now head coaches of the Los Angeles Chargers and Baltimore Ravens, respectively, once faced off in the Super Bowl.
Jim and John Harbaugh, football coaches
John and Jim Harbaugh are both NFL star coaches, but they're far from best friends on and off the field.

The rivalry between John and Jim Harbaugh has always been a relatively friendly one — the brothers genuinely show mutual respect for one another and older brother John has even called Jim "the best coach in football right now," the NFL reported in 2013.

And then, for the first time, the Harbaughs went head-to-head when their teams — then the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers — each made it to the 2013 Super Bowl.

The Ravens defeated the 49ers 34 to 31, and while Jim congratulated John on his victory, John said that the situation was very awkward after the game, Bleacher Report reported.

Both brothers were soon back on perfectly good terms, and have even occasionally showed up on the sidelines for each other.

Venus and Serena Williams have had a friendly sibling rivalry on the court.
Venus Williams, Serena Williams
Venus and Serena Williams have a friendly yet competitive sibling rivalry in the tennis world.

These two top tennis-playing sisters have played each other professionally two dozen times now, and every match was a tense one — not just for the crowds watching, but for the Williams sisters themselves.

Both are incredibly competitive and both have multiple accolades in their sport, but their friendly sibling rivalry has never turned ugly. In fact, both maintain that they have a huge amount of respect and admiration for each other.

Serena has said she doesn't enjoy matches against her sister, telling Sports Illustrated in 2013, "If I win I'm not super excited, and if I lose I'm really not excited."

Venus agreed, saying in the interview, "I think we just both want to win ... I think we just both have so much respect for each other's game that makes it probably a little tougher because you know you're not going to get an easy win."

The sisters' rise to tennis stardom was shown in the 2021 film "King Richard," which stars Will Smith as their father. Serena retired from tennis in 2022.

Phil and Steve Mahre, fraternal twins born four minutes apart, are considered to be two of the greatest ski racers of all time and have competed against each other.

Phil and Steve Mahre competed against each other in the Olympics.

The twins ended their ski careers following the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, where Phil won gold in slalom and Steve took silver.

Phil Mahre went down in history as a more celebrated athlete than his brother, finishing in the top three in the World Cup overall standings for six consecutive seasons, and winning the title in three.

But there were no hard feelings: After the Olympics, the brothers went into business together, the Seattle Times reported.

Julia Roberts and her brother, Eric, were estranged from each other for almost 10 years.
Julia and Eric Roberts
Julia and Eric Roberts didn't speak for a decade before reconciling.

Though the celebrity siblings are on good terms now, a heated custody battle involving Eric Roberts' daughter, actor Emma Roberts, threatened his relationship with his sister.

Eric Roberts had previously dealt with issues relating to drug and alcohol abuse, and Julia took the side of his ex-wife, Kelly Cunningham, in the custody dispute, even helping pay her legal fees, E! News reported.

However, after Julia Roberts gave birth to twin daughters in 2004, the siblings apparently reconciled.

"I wouldn't characterize it as a falling-out. I was crazy about my sisters. Loved them, adored them. They were precious to me, and we had times of great closeness. We all felt very protective of each other, but the hardest person to protect yourself from is yourself," Eric Roberts told Vanity Fair in 2018.

"I was exhausting to be around: complainy, blamey, unable to enjoy enjoyment," the actor said of his addiction problem. "Everyone in my world needed a break sometimes, and that must have included Julia."
