- D'Arcy Carden said Jennifer Coolidge is even "smarter and funnier" than people think.
- She also shared her thoughts on a potential season two of Amazon's hit "A League of Their Own."
- Warning: Spoilers ahead for "Shotgun Wedding."
D'Arcy Carden told Insider that she and Jennifer Coolidge lived with their castmates in a "gigantic, beautiful house on the beach" in the Dominican Republic where their new movie "Shotgun Wedding" was filmed.
The "Good Place" star said that while Coolidge is everyone's favorite funny lady at the moment, there's a side to her that she reserves for her friends and colleagues.
"She's America's sweetheart and she's the funniest person alive and we can't get enough of her, but in person, she's not trying to be the center of attention," she said. "And she says her funny thing every once in a while, and she likes to have one-on-one deep conversations. And it's not about being the loudest, craziest, funniest person."
"She loves to give other people their moment to shine. She's really generous with her comedy and her laughter and her time," Carden continued.
The "Barry" actor explained that there are two types of funny people in the world — those who want to be the funniest person in the room and those who get energized and excited by other people's jokes.
Even though making the world laugh is Coolidge's superpower, Carden said her co-star falls into the latter category.
Carden recalled Coolidge and her on-screen husband wearing crowns they had made "out of flowers" and "cracking each other up" over wine at dinner.
"If you think that you're watching someone be kind of kooky and ditsy or whatever, she's not that," Carden said of Coolidge. "She's smarter and funnier and ahead of you, which is one of my favorite things about her, that she's winking at you a lot. And you can see it in her eyes."
Carden's spoke with Insider about the preparation required to play a proper villain and the potential future of her viral hit Amazon Prime show "A League of Thir Own."
Carden watched 'Die Hard' to prepare for her role
Carden plays Harriet in "Shotgun Wedding." She's the zen, ditsy girlfriend of Darcy Rivera's (Jennifer Lopez) father Robert (Cheech Marin) — until she's not.
Toward the end of the film, it's revealed that Harriet is actually Sean Hawkins' girlfriend. They've teamed up with pirates to hijack Darcy and Tom's (Josh Duhamel) wedding. Sean is Darcy's ex-boyfriend and knows that her father Robert is rich. So, they kidnap wedding guests in an attempt to blackmail Robert for money.
Carden is one of America's funniest women in her own right, but we rarely get to see her flex her evil muscle.
On "The Good Place" her character Janet's default setting was nice. Plus, she recently won viewers' hearts as Rockford Peach first basewoman and Carson Shaw's (Abbi Jacobson) potential love interest on "A League of Their Own."
She described being the center of the "Shotgun Wedding" twist as "so fun" and "delicious."
"I watched all the 'Die Hard' movies in preparation because those villains in the 'Die Hard' movies are some of the best villains in any movies ever," Carden said.
"I always feel like, whatever I played last time, I want to play the complete opposite next time," she continued, noting why she had such a blast playing Harriet after hanging up Greta's mitt after filming season one of "A League of Their Own."
The actor told Insider she didn't have an update on a potential season two of the baseball drama, but admitted, "I'm certainly hoping for a season two."
"I'm right along there with all the people asking for a #renew and all that stuff, which we're seeing all those tweets," she added, noting that her and her castmates appreciate that "the fans of the show are not forgetting about it."
She described the social media campaign to get "A League of Their Own" renewed as "an every day, all day type of thing."
"It's really special and nice and generous. And if not for us, for the fans, we're definitely hoping that we get this season two," Carden said.
"Shotgun Wedding" is available to stream now on Amazon Prime.
