According to an estimate by the returns tech platform Optoro, as many as 9.5 billion pounds of returns ended up in landfills in 2022 — equivalent to 10,500 fully loaded Boeing 747s.
Four states — California, Colorado, Maine, and Oregon — have enacted extended producer responsibility laws. At least 11 others have either introduced legislation or plan to do so.
